THE STARS

Both premium icon wines from Changyu – M12 and PACE – turned out to be the absolute

stars of the tasting. They impressed with their structure, depth, and international class.

PURE INNOVATION

Both Cabernet Whites were honored by the audience as fantastic and groundbreaking

innovations from China. Their aromatic clarity and finesse matched perfectly with

international benchmarks.

Note on Media Coverage

Videos with comments and interviews unfortunately could not be recorded. The guests—

mostly employed by high-end restaurants—were too shy and cautious about how their faces

and statements might be used. They were not free to appear in promotional material for any

product. This is a common issue, especially in Germany, where people are often hesitant to

be filmed and concerned about how video content might be used. We will always try, but this

time it simply was not possible.

Prowein Meiningers Weinwelt

About ``Meiningers Weinwelt``

"Meiningers Weinwelt" is a lifestyle and wine magazine that highlights people, trends, and

stories from the world of wine and enjoyment. Published with a stylish and modern design, it

features interviews with industry experts, insights into wine culture, and coverage of major

events like ProWein. The magazine blends professional knowledge with accessible storytelling,

making it appealing to both wine connoisseurs and curious newcomers. Its name, ABsacker—a

German term for a final drink to end the evening—reflects its relaxed yet refined tone.

About the article:

At the ProWein trade fair, Mr. Sun Jian, General Manager of China’s oldest and largest wine

producer, Yantai Changyu Pioneer Wine Company, discussed the rise of Chinese wine. Founded

in 1892 in Yantai, Changyu holds a 25% market share and owns several notable wineries,

including Château Changyu Moser XV.

Although China aimed to become the world’s top wine producer by 2020, the focus has shifted

toward building strong domestic brands. Favorable climates and manual cultivation contribute

to high-quality grapes, especially in regions like Ningxia.

Wine consumption in China is still low, with Baijiu dominating, but younger consumers and

women are increasingly turning to wine as a lifestyle choice. With help from Austrian oenologist

Lenz Moser, Changyu’s wines have entered international markets and gained global

recognition.

Mr. Sun is confident in the future of Chinese wine, seeing it as a growing symbol of social status

and cultural sophistication.

Chinesischer Wein zum Ausprobieren

Chinese Wine to Try – Featured at Restaurant Koya

Introducing Chinese Wines to Germany

Taibei Wu, owner of the Düsseldorf-based restaurant Koya, has begun offering a wide selection

of Chinese red and white wines, including a notable ice wine from China's oldest winery,

Changyu. However, importing these wines into Germany wasn't simple. A shipment of ice wine

labeled “Icewine Gold Diamond” was rejected by customs because the term “Eiswein” is legally

protected in Germany. Wu had to relabel the bottles and reimport them.

A Long Road to Wine Distribution

Wu represents Changyu across Europe. He studied in Germany, has lived there for over 20

years, and coincidentally became the brand’s European general distributor. He initially

preferred French and Italian wines until discovering Changyu wines over a decade ago. He was

surprised by their quality and eventually signed a distribution agreement after meeting the

company's CEO at the 2024 ProWein trade fair in Düsseldorf.

Wine Tasting and Cultural History at Koya

At Koya, guests can sample Chinese wines from a storage facility near the Lower Rhine. The

restaurant displays historical imagery of Changyu and the winemaking heritage in China,

including a picture of a famous Château in the Miyu district of Beijing, which houses a museum

about Chinese winemaking.

Changyu is over 135 years old and among China’s most prestigious wineries.

Grape Challenges and International Recognition

Originally, European vines didn’t thrive well in Chinese soil. The solution was to graft them onto

Chinese rootstock, creating unique hybrids. Since the 1950s, Chen Puxian and his wife led

Changyu for 40 years. Today, Changyu produces a wide range of varietals (Riesling, Chardonnay,

Cabernet, Merlot) – all available at Koya, many by the glass.

To encourage tasting, guests receive a free bottle with an order of Peking duck. Several wines

have won international awards, including Koya Brandy XO, which Wu is especially proud of and

even named his restaurant after.
