About the Hamburger China-Society (HCG):
The Hamburger China-Society (HCG) is a politically and ideologically neutral non-profit
organization founded in 1973, making it the oldest China-focused association in Hamburg. Its
primary mission is to foster interest in China and deepen the understanding of both the
country's current challenges and its rich historical and cultural heritage. Over the past 50 years,
HCG has served as a vital bridge between Hamburg and China, promoting mutual
understanding through high-quality events, intercultural exchange, and the publication
Hamburger China-Nachrichten.
A significant milestone in HCG’s history was the establishment of a partnership in 1988 with
the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (SPAFFC). This
collaboration opened doors for meaningful dialogue in Shanghai and marked a high point with
the visit of President Zhou Muyao to Hamburg in 2008. Today, the partnership continues under
the direction of Li Mingjun, the current General Director of SPAFFC.
HCG plays a key role in Hamburg’s Chinese community by organizing a variety of cultural and
educational activities. Notable among them is “China Time,” a recurring event series that
includes concerts, lectures, and exhibitions. Many of the society’s events take place at the Yu
Garden Teahouse, built in 2008 in the style of the historic Yu-Yuan Teahouse in Shanghai,
offering an authentic cultural setting. HCG also offers tailored intercultural trainings and
internal seminars for organizations.
Social engagement is another cornerstone of HCG’s work. The organization supports various
charitable initiatives in China, including the first SOS Children’s Village, aid for earthquake
victims in Sichuan, and support for primary schools such as the Guangping School. Traditional
Chinese celebrations like the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival have become cherished
annual highlights in Hamburg, attracting members and friends alike.
Through its long-standing commitment to cultural exchange, educational outreach, and social
involvement, the Hamburger China-Gesellschaft continues to strengthen the bonds between
Germany and China.
