In the wine grape planting history of China, two persons with the surname of Zhang must be mentioned: one is Zhang Qian in the Western Han Dynasty, who brought back wine grape from the Western Regions as well as wine makers to provide a feast for Emperor Wu. Unfortunately, these grapes and skills failed to be passed down. When another person with the surname of Zhang, Zhang Bishi, an industrialist in the late Qing Dynasty, wanted to build a wine factory in Yantai, what he could find was only a few edible grapes.

At present, Changyu has laid out 300,000 mu grape base in six producing areas, Xinjiang Shihezi, Ningxia Qingtongxia, Shandong Yantai, Shaanxi Jingyang, Liaoning Huanren and Beijing Miyun, accounting for about 1/4 of the total wine grape planting area in China; meanwhile, supporting chateau and fermentation center are constructed in all the six bases to guarantee that the grapes can enter the factory for fermentation in fresh state. In particular, the grapes for chateau are stipulated to be crushed and enter the fermentation tank within one hour after harvest.
