According to historical records, Chinese people started to plant grape as early as in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 9 BC). At the time of Changyu’s founding, however, there were no quality wine grapes in China. Changyu had to introduce 124 kinds of wine grapes in three times from the western countries. After several twists and turns, foreign grape vines were successfully cultivated in Yantai, a historic leap for winemaking industry of China. and from then on, China bid farewell to the history of lacking quality vinifera. At present, more than 90% of the wine grapes planted in China are derived from the varieties introduced and bred by Changyu from foreign countries.
