Decanter Report: 2014 Wine of Mirefleurs Graded 88 Points
Decanter, a global authoritative wine magazine, recently published Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur: 2014-2015 Tasting Report, 2014 wine of Château Mirefleurs belonging to AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, which was acquired by Changyu last year, was graded 88 points.
The comments stated: “With soft aroma of red fruit and full tannin, it requires some time to soften, but it already has strong fragrance. Thomas Do Chi Nam, the chief winemaker, once served as the winemaker of Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (note: secondes crus in 1855 Bordeaux Classification System) and Chateau Margaux (note: premiers` crus in 1855 Bordeaux Classification System), so you can feel his perfect wine making technology. It is brewed with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. It has been possessed by Changyu Company since 2015 (Castel Family retains 10% of shares). Wine serving period: 2016-2019.”
Château Mirefleurs is located in YVrac, Bordeaux, with the castle built around 1860. At present, it covers an area of 55 ha., in which the area of vineyard is 40.38 ha. Its main grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and the longest age of tree has exceeded 55 years.
It is indeed rare that Château Mirefleurs, as a chateau in AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, can obtain 88 points in such an ordinary year. What is more commendable is that 88 points obtained by Château Mirefleurs has evened up the second wine of the secondes crus Chateau Leoville Las Cases and Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron, equaled the Cinquiemes Crus Chateau Camensac, and surpassed many old-brand Crus Bourgeois in Medoc such as Chateau Bellegrave (87 points), Chateau Clauzet (86 points), Domaine des Beaumont (85 points), etc. (As usual, the list of 2014 Crus Bourgeois in Medoc will be published in September this year, this paper is based on the 2014 mark of Crus Bourgeois in Medoc in old version).
According to information, Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur: 2014-2015 Tasting Report published by Decanter involves 250 wines, in which the wines of AOC Bordeaux in 2014 and 2015 are covered and only the wines of AOC Bordeaux Supérieur in 2014 are involved, with those in 2015 to be determined. It is generally known that 2015 is a recognized great year for AOC Bordeaux, which continues the Bordeaux “magic year” legend with mantissa as “5” together with 2005 and 1995 and is called four “golden years” since 21th century together with 2010, 2009 and 2005. As Thomas Do Chi Nam introduced, although 2015 wine of Mirefleurs still existed in the stage of aging in oak barrel at present, it had already displayed rich aroma, balanced structure and memorable complexity.
Then, in subsequent tasting report of Bordeaux Supérieur in 2015, according to the performance of Château Mirefleurs in 2014, it will be as easy as winking for the wines of 2015 to obtain a grade of over 90 points. 2015 is the first year after Changyu acquires Château Mirefleurs, we look forwards to starting from 90 points!
